Context: This passages is found towards the end of the book in chapter 10,†Recovering from the Heart-of-Palm Flu† While making a crib for his soon to be child, Ian comes across this thought. This was around the time Ian and Rita had gotten married. It show how after Ian let and tried new things in his life that made him happier. Also this made him more open-minded as a person by seeing that there are more ways than just one to do things, and not being afraid of things that are different than what he is used to. Another interpretation is that Ian has been freed from his guilt and is now allowed to experience things, get on where his life left off so long ago. This is really the resolution of the internal conflict that Ian has been going through since the climax of the book at the start. He is now guilt free and able to enjoy life. This also really effects the kids, Thomas, Agatha, and Daphne, because they felt like they had ruined his life by having to raise him, and so they still felt like they owned him. Now they can feel content know that his life is moving forward. The Bedloe’s don’t have to carry their burdens and are all able to carry on now. 2. Significance: This connects to the essential questions and themes of Saint Maybe. Theme #2,† Redemption can only be achieved through forgiveness of oneself and others,† This shows that Ian forgave himself because he changed his life for the better. Had he not forgave himself he would still be using â€Å"straight lines†, or still be the same Ian who felt guilty about causing his brother’s death being cautious not using his â€Å"personal opinion†, and not being able to have â€Å"U shapes† or happiness with his life. So, in a sense, by being able to create what he did show that he has feels redeem, by being able to move on and try new things. This Passage also answers Essential Question #2, â€Å" Does forgiveness need to be earned or should it be given? † because it show how Ian had to work so hard to achieve the â€Å"satisfaction† of being set free from his guilt, or forgiven, for what he thought he did. Had he not tried he would have never been forgiven he would still lead a life of despair and depression and die not ever getting to enjoy his life. Another that can be answered is Essential Question #4,† Under certain circumstances do individuals deserve a second chance? †Cleary Ian need a second for what had happened. Ian blamed himself at first but since he tried so hard and changed what he is used to doing just for forgiveness he is entitled to a â€Å"second chance† a chance to live again and have a good outlook on life, to grow up. 3. Literary Devices: One literary device used in this passage is tone. The tone use here is happy and uplifting. This voice the author chose, by using worse like, â€Å"satisfied† and â€Å"surprised†, tells us he is now not the same depressed person that he once was and that he is content with where his life is now. He has stop dwelling on the past and changed for the better. Another literary device is used here is foreshadowing. It foreshadows that the rest of Ian life, and all the Bedloe’s lives, will not be plague with what had happened and will live normal lives. By being able to try new things such as the â€Å"U shapes† it shows that he has moved on and is able to try new things without the fear of making a mistake. In other words he is no longer a â€Å"saint maybe† and is a new man. This passage is really is symbolism for Ian’s forgiveness and him being able to move on. The â€Å"straight lines† symbolize Ian’s life before he forgave himself not able to put his own â€Å"†¦ judgment and personal opinion† in things because he felt guilty for what he did to his brother and was afraid to do anything like it again because he was so traumatized. After he forgave himself he was able to do the â€Å"bow-back chairs and benches† because he is able to use his opinions. He is able to do so because he is now a different person, a free (forgiven) man, able to do as he pleases, not able to doubt himself anymore. So the change in his style of wood working really displays the change in his life.

Orwell’s Rules for Good Language Essay

Good written and verbal language is essential for effective communication. Writing in 1946, George Orwell points to several problems with the contemporary use of English. In his estimation, these problems lead to meaningless utterances that are unclear and imprecise. Orwell provides several suggestions for improving the use of English: avoid metaphors and over-used figures of speech, use short words in the place of long words, cut out unnecessary words, use the active voice, avoid the use of jargon by using words from everyday English, and break the rules if following them will create a statement lacking in sophistication. These suggestions can be used as a measuring stick to gauge different author’s use of the English language. The writings of three authors were analyzed using Orwell’s suggestions as a guideline, and it was found that Cuthbertson and Bush violate the principles of good English while Lutz actively campaigns for the use of clear, precise English. In â€Å"From the Right,† Mike Cuthbertson violates many of Orwell’s rules; and as a result, the writing lacks clarity, and the imagery is not vivid. Take for instance the following sentence: â€Å"To accomplish this, I full well knew that some concessions to my gardener wife would be necessary. † In this sentence, the author has some unnecessary words (â€Å"full well†) and uses a passive construction at the end of the sentence. This sentence could be more precise with the implementation of Orwell’s rules: â€Å"To accomplish this, I knew that I must make concessions to my gardener wife. † Another example of Cuthbertson’s use of the passive voice appears in the following sentence: â€Å"So rural was the area that I actually attended a one-room school house for grades one and two (no kindergarten, then) before a brand new amalgamated school was built in the village and all the area kids were bused to it. † Later in the passage, Cuthbertson uses a long, relatively uncommon word when a shorter, more frequently used word would convey his meaning just as well: â€Å"magnanimously proposed† could be replaced with â€Å"selflessly proposed. † Throughout the passage, Cuthbertson uses figures of speech that have been so over-used they have lost their punch: â€Å"under the watchful eye,† â€Å"to earn our keep,† â€Å"at that tender age,† â€Å"the fairer sex,† â€Å"my better half,† â€Å"to keep my ego firmly in check,† â€Å"to lose myself in a good novel,† and â€Å"been put in my place. † To be fair to Cuthbertson, it should be noted that he appears to have used this style of writing to serve a literary purpose, namely the evocation of his childhood years spent in a farming community and the lessons that continue to be felt in his married life. However, the author’s passive voice and over-used figures of speech detract from the imagery he seems to want to create in the reader’s mind. His communication would have been much more effective if he had created new ways of describing his situation. Alastair McKie’s compilation some of George W. Bush’s statements contains some glaring examples of poor English. Not only does Bush violate Orwell’s suggestions for good English, he appears to be incapable of constructing proper sentences and using words correctly. For example, Bush repeats a made-up word, â€Å"misunderestimated,† three times in one paragraph. In another paragraph, Bush remarks that â€Å"ticket counters and airplanes will fly. † Flying ticket counters would certainly be a remarkable occurrence! While the flying ticket counters remark is humorous, other of Bush’s statements are just confusing. Take for example, â€Å"We are fully committed to working with both sides to bring the level of terror down to an acceptable level for both. † If the United States and its allies are one side of the war on terror and the other side are the terrorists, is Bush saying that he is willing to work with the country of which he is president? Shouldn’t that go without saying? Bush, or at the very least his speechwriters, would have greatly benefited from reading Orwell’s essay, the following sentence in particular: â€Å"Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one’s meaning as clear as one can through pictures and sensations. † If Bush had a clear idea of what he wanted to say, maybe he would be better at saying it. Orwell has a further suggestion that could help Bush on his way to becoming a clear thinker who uses rhetoric more effectively. For Orwell, improvements in these areas will lead towards political improvements: â€Å"If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration. † In contrast, George Orwell would have greatly admired William Lutz. Lutz spent sixteen years collecting examples of double-speak which he then compiled into a book. Some of these examples are euphemisms for the most horrid things: â€Å"dehired† and â€Å"non-retained† (i. e. fired) and â€Å"negative patient care outcome† (i. e. death following a medical procedure). These euphemisms are similar in function to those, mentioned by Orwell, intended to mask indescribable horrors of war or to rationalize abhorrent behavior. Others of Lutz’s examples are needlessly complicated phrasings of simple concepts: â€Å"Exit access is that part of a means of egress that leads to an entrance or an exit. † All those words simply indicate a way of accessing a door or window. Still other examples are merely funny: â€Å"occasional protein spill† (i. e. vomit) and â€Å"television with non-multicolor capability† (i. e. a black and white television). These examples are similar to those cited by Orwell when he speaks of the relationship between euphemisms and insincerity. He finds that when writers are insincere, they cloak their real feelings in lofty, verbose language. One hopes that with Lutz’s drawing attention to the sheer amount of doublespeak that exists in our world, people will become more aware of how empty it is and stop using it. In conclusion, Cuthbertson and Bush violate the principles of good English while Lutz actively campaigns for the use of clear, precise English. These three examples come from different genres: autobiography, speech, and non-fiction. As such, they provide evidence for the importance of good English as a communication tool in all areas of life. Orwell’s principles are effective guidelines to follow in any means of communication. After all, it is important to be clear, concise, and precise when communicating with others.

In the movie both the leaders are struggling to maintain their position and to get along with each other. Carter is half the age of Dan and he is still young learning the work. He thinks that he could to better for the work therefore he chose to replace Dan who is 51 years old and is a executive in his company. He feels uncomfortable to work with Carter. Carter had highest level of seniority based due to his position in the company and becomes the boss of Dan and all workers has to his instructions and listen to his ord ers (Uk essay,2014). It focuses on the many effects it had on the culture of medieval Europe and the possibility that it expedited cultural change. I found that Robert S. Gottfried had two main theses in the book. He argued that rodent and insect life cycles, as well as the changing of weather systems affect plague. He claimed that the devastation plague causes is partly due to its perpetual recurrences. Plague ravaged Europe in cycles, devastated the people when they were recuperating. As can be later discovered in the book, the cycles of plague consumed the European population. A second thesis, which he described in greater detail, was that the plagues expedited the process of cultural change. The plagues killed a large percentage of each generation, leaving room for change. The Black Death covers the affects that numerous plagues had on the culture. The cycle of the plagues struck each generation. After a p lague ravaged Europe from 599-699, plague killed in 608, 618, 628, 640, 654, 684-686, 694-700, 718, and 740-750. Gottfried makes it apparent that man did not understand enough about the environment to prevent plague, maybe a message to the world today. Dense population, as Gottfried suggested, breeds plague. Early plague has educated us, and we should focus on this, plague seems to be inevitable with certain circumstances and lack of knowledge. Abstract Cigarette smoking is the greatest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Secondhand smoke causes numerous lung cancer deaths annually. Measures have been taken in both workplaces and public places to limit exposure to secondhand smoke. The economic cost of smokers to society is phenomenal- it includes monetary costs, lost workdays and shortened work lives. Many states are establishing and maintaining comprehensive tobacco-control programs to reduce tobacco use. They provide education to our youth to prevent them from ever starting and smoking cessation programs for individuals that currently wish to stop smoking. Education and support are known ways to eventually prevent smoking in the future. Efforts to increase the public perception of the harmful effects of tobacco must utilize a comprehensive approach that affects policy development, education strategies and health care systems. Smoking is becoming more and more unfashionable as time goes on. There are many studies conducted showing that secondhand smoke is a health hazard to both the smoker and anyone that relies on the same air supply, not to mention the unpleasantness and discomfort it causes those that do not smoke. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that it is estimated that secondhand smoke that emerges from exhaling and burning cigarettes causes approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths and 37,000 heart disease deaths in nonsmokers each year. (Nolo, 2002). According to a 1998 Gallop poll, 94% of Americans, including both smokers and nonsmokers, agree that companies should either ban or restrict smoking to properly ventilated areas. Another Gallop poll indicates that 95% of nonsmokers, and 69% of smokers, t hink California's ban on smoking in almost all workplaces is positive. Some companies are now refusing to hire anyone who admits to smoking on a job application because of higher healthcare insurance, absenteeism, unemployment insurance and workers' compensation insurance associated with these individuals. Movies are everywhere, but the Harry Potter movies have much in common with the Twilight saga. I love watching a wide variety of movies and have noticed that the two movie series that I love the most are Harry Potter and Twilight. These two series are alike in many ways, they were both born based off of books, they both have mythical characters in them, however they also have differences, Twilight is more of a love story and Harry Potter is more of an action-based movie. In both series the age of the actors are based on teenagers coming into adulthood and facing trouble throughout their journey.They are all in the same age group of seventeen and eighteen when the last movie is finished. Both movies are about young adults facing danger and living to tell the story. In Harry Potter you have young Harry finding out he is a wizard, then moving to the wizard school Hogwarts to learn how to control his magic. The movies start with him as an eleven year old boy living with his aunt and uncl e who treat him like a servant. He finds out that his parents were murdered by Lord Voldemort. He grows up throughout the seven movies until he is seventeen and faced with the fact that he has to fight Lord Voldemort to the death.Twilight begins with Bella Swan, a seventeen year old girl moving to her fathers in Forks, Washington where she meets Edward Cullen and his family of vampires. Edward is also seventeen although he has been seventeen for over ninety years. Bella becomes a vampire after she turns eighteen and has married Edward. Robert Pattinson has played characters in both movies. He plays the part of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potters the Goblet of Fire. He plays the character of Edward Cullen in Twilight. Both series are based off of books which are very popular with today’s youth as well as young adults. Each series has more than on book.Harry Potter has seven books in the series which are named: The Sorcerer’s Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Az kaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hollows. Twilight has four books in their saga which are: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Both were made to keep the reader’s interested and wanting more when they were finished watching the movie. If someone were to watch the first movie they would have to see the rest to find out what happens in the end. Do they live happily ever after? Does Harry win against Voldemort? Does Bella become a vampire?Do Edward and Bella stay together in the end? These are all questions asked after watching the first movie of each series. The movies were finally made to put a face to the character so that fans could see who the book was talking about from the beginning. It is always easier to read a book that has a movie made after it so that you can have a face to go with the name of the characters in the book. The final book to each series has been split into a two part movie to keep the su spense going in the movie. Even though most already know what will happen it is a bit more fun to see it happen on the television or on a theater screen.Harry says in the last movie to Ollivander the wizard that gave him his first wand, â€Å"You talk about wands as if they have feelings. † There are mythical characters in each movie, in Harry Potter there are witches, wizards, elves, giants, centaurs, werewolves, and others. Harry Potter was mainly about witches and wizards although they brought up the other mythical characters throughout all of the movies. They had teacher’s that were a werewolf and a giant. There were mermaids in the lake, centaurs in the forest, and elves at both the school and the wizard bank. The Twilight movies are based on vampires and werewolves.Both movies have interesting characters, such as Ron Weasley whom is Harry’s best friend, Hagrid whom is a giant that teaches at Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore who is the head master. Dumbledore said, â€Å"It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but it takes a great deal more to stand up to your friends,† In the Sorcerer’s Stone. From Twilight there is Emmett Cullen whom is always having fun at Bella’s expense. He is always laughing at her clumsiness and mortality there is Alice who is graceful, fun loving and carefree. Alice also sees the future of those around her.Those visions can be changed, depending on the path that the person takes. Then there is Jasper, he can sense other people’s emotions as well as control the emotions in a room to keep others calm. They both have a battle scene in the last scene of each movie. Harry is constantly battling with Lord Voldemort in one way or another throughout all of the movies. He has the final battle in the Deathly Hollows part two where the wizard world fights as one to be rid of Lord Voldemort and his followers. In Twilight Bella, Edward and the Cullen’s constantly battl e other vampires to keep them from hurting Bella.The use the help of Jacob Black and his pack of werewolves to defeat new born vampires that are after Bella along with in the last movie Breaking Dawn part two they have to bring witnesses together to prove that Bella gave birth to a half-vampire half-human daughter to Edward. Alice sees a future of the Cullen’s becoming extinct because the Vulturi have been told that Bella and Edward made a vampire child when she is actually their biological daughter. These two movies are also different in many ways a few of these differences are that Harry Potter is about a young boy constantly having to fight for his life and the lives of others.The prophecy that led to Harry’s destiny is, â€Å"Neither can live while the other survives,† told by Professor Sybell Trewlawney. It speaks of Harry and Lord Voldemort also known as Tom Riddle. Harry Potter is more of a man vs. man whereas Twilight is more of a love story. It is a boy meets girl they fall in love even though Bella knows that Edward is a vampire, they fight to keep one another. Bella said, â€Å"Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone that you loved,† at the end of Twilight.There are many people all over the world debating on what is different between the two movie series. They are not as different as people say. The fans that like Harry Potter also like Twilight, the fans are also from all age groups not necessarily just teenagers and young adults. These two series have brought a large group of people together to read these books as well as watch the movies. Every fan has seen all of both series movies more than once as well as read all of the books to each series. These movies will always be on most peoples watch list.

Marxism in “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti Essay

How is Marxism presented as a metaphor in Christina Rossetti’s poem ‘Goblin Market’? In Goblin Market, Rossetti presents Marxism as a metaphor through a number of different characters and through the language used. It could be argued that in the poem there is this idea that consumerism is bad, and that we are never satisfied with what we have which is essentially the theory behind Marxist views. An example of this in the poem is that once Laura has had a taste of the fruit she immediately wants more. This is shown in Laura â€Å"in an absent dream†¦longing for the night†. Laura is just wasting away waiting for the night to come so she can hear the goblins cry yet again. The use of the word ‘longing’ could be used as a metaphor for the desire and addiction involved in consumer consumption in the economy as a whole. Another way by which Rossetti presents Marxism through metaphor is through the goblins. The goblins could represent business men and therefore be a metaphor for the greed and gluttony in capitalistic society, who tricks people into buying their products. For example when it says â€Å"brother to sly brother† it is as if the goblins have spotted a vulnerable customer who they know they can persuade to buy their produce. Rossetti’s use of the word ‘sly’ infers that the goblins are devious and deceitful in their transaction of the goods, which suggests the greed associated with capitalism through a Marxist opinion. It could therefore be argued that, even though money is the central medium for business, in ‘Goblin Market’ the real value is in the greed and the experience. The golden lock of hair given to the goblins could represent this method of trade however. The â€Å"Goblin men† Are a metaphor for capitalism, and the exploitation of women by these capitalists. The Goblin men want her to buy their fruit, which could be seen as a metaphor for consumerism. On the other hand, it could also be suggested that this metaphor is for the capitalist system as a whole. To get this fruit Laura has to sell her body, and purity, represented by the hair that she sells to the goblin men. Look at this passage in particular. With the help of Marxist criticism we can make the argument that Rossetti was influenced by her contemporary society. As mentioned earlier, every society must – according to Marxism – pass through three stages in order to develop. The third stage of society’s development, the bourgeois society, is a society where all means of production is controlled by one class in society and can therefore be interpreted as the Victorian society and its relationship with the British colonies during this time. The goblins in this poem could therefore be said to represent the controlling force in the economy. The study of the fruits that the goblin men sell through a Marxist perspective is a very important part of the analysis of ‘Goblin Market’. When considering the items offered to the two girls, certain properties of the fruits are particularly interesting. The fruits are described by the author as tempting, sweet-tasting and luscious-looking. They are also exotic and not the kind of fruits which are grown in the typical British climate and nature which presents them as very idealistic. These idyllic fruits could therefore be argued to be a metaphor for the appeal of the capitalist regime and the presentation of propaganda through consumer products – which draws a parallel to the way in which the fruits are presented as â€Å"sweeter than honey† and â€Å"clearer than water† which both have connotations of natural purity and fairness. By using these exotic fruits as the bait with which to trap the innocent girls, the reader gets the feeling that the goblin men have travelled around the world in order to collect and sell the fruit. The selling and consuming of this fruit can therefore be interpreted as the conquering and exploitation of the British colonies all over the world. The structure of ‘Goblin Market’ could be seen to represent Marxism through the use of enjambment and the visual appearance of the poem, due to it being an evenly laid out piece of writing. This is because Marxism was the basis for communism which tends towards fairness and even structure in society which is reflected in the structure of the poem.
